It’s nice to be cool, particularly when the folks naming you cool are none other than the esteemed team at Gartner. It is why we are so excited that Gartner chose MapD as a Cool Vendor in DBMS.

Each year, the Gartner research team selects a handful of innovative, imaginative companies from the expanding pool of start-ups. As Donald Feinberg noted in his writeup of another Cool Vendor;

“With the ever-growing number of DBMS products (hundreds or even thousands), it is increasingly difficult for a new product to be competitive and to stand out from the pack…”

Well five of us stood out from the pack in 2016. In addition to MapD, Gartner selected four other companies this year; BlobCity, Blue Talon, Cazena and Ryft.

The 2016 Cool Vendors report starts with providing a lay of the DBMS landscape.

The Gartner team named three main trends:

  1. New hardware vehicles
  2. GPUs in the Cloud
  3. Security in the Cloud

In particular Gartner talked about how applications are extracting maximum performance from new generations of silicon - namely GPUs and FPGAs. This application trend, coupled with broader availability of GPUs in the cloud will dramatically accelerate adoption for enterprises both large and small.

This is important.

The two phenomena, using GPUs to deliver application performance and the growing availability of GPUs in the cloud (almost every CSP has announced GPU availability) will transform the computing landscape in the coming 12-18 months.

From big science to big data - the computing world is about to speed up and we are at the forefront of that effort.

GPU-tuned applications like MapD’s database and Immerse visualization layer efficiently and materially enhance performance.

To wit, in many of our deployments, MapD rides on top of existing databases; ingesting the billion+ rows of data you want instantaneous performance on and executing it in the GPU environment (both the query and the visualization of the result).

This allows the existing, legacy infrastructure to do what its best at, aided by the supercomputing performance that MapD and the GPU hardware can deliver. It allows for super-slick demonstrations like these that query millions of rows, in the cloud, in real time.

Tuning database solutions for the GPU world is what we have been about since we started in 2013.

It is paying off - first with our Series A, now with this recognition.

We can’t wait to see what the balance of the year holds.
